Hybrid Generative-Discriminative Nucleus Classification of Renal Cell Carcinoma

چکیده
In this paper we propose to use advanced classification techniques with shape features for nuclei classification in tissue microarray images of renal cell carcinoma. Our aim is to improve the classification accuracy in distinguishing between healthy and cancerous cells. The approach is inspired by natural language processing. Several features are extracted from the automatically segmented nuclei and quantized to visual words, and their co-occurrences are encoded as visual topics. To do this, a generative model, the probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis is learned from quantized shape descriptors (visual words). Finally, we extract from the learned models a generative score, that is used as input for new classifiers, defining a hybrid generative/discriminative classification algorithm. We compare our results with the same classifiers on the feature set to assess the increase in accuracy when we apply pLSA. We demonstrate that the feature space created using pLSA achieves better accuracies than the original feature space.

Renal Cancer Cell Classification Using Generative Embeddings and Information Theoretic Kernels
In this paper, we propose a hybrid generative/discriminative classification scheme and apply it to the detection of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) on tissue microarray (TMA) images. In particular we use probabilistic latent semantic analysis (pLSA) as a generative model to perform generative embedding onto the free energy score space (FESS). Subsequently, we use information theoretic kernels on the...
متن کاملA Hybrid Generative/Discriminative Approach to Semi-Supervised Classifier Design
Semi-supervised classifier design that simultaneously utilizes both labeled and unlabeled samples is a major research issue in machine learning. Existing semisupervised learning methods belong to either generative or discriminative approaches. This paper focuses on probabilistic semi-supervised classifier design and presents a hybrid approach to take advantage of the generative and discriminati...
متن کاملHybrid Discriminative-Generative Approach with Gaussian Processes
Machine learning practitioners are often faced with a choice between a discriminative and a generative approach to modelling. Here, we present a model based on a hybrid approach that breaks down some of the barriers between the discriminative and generative points of view, allowing continuous dimensionality reduction of hybrid discretecontinuous data, discriminative classification with missing ...
متن کاملHybrid HMM and HCRF model for sequence classification
We propose a hybrid model combining a generative model and a discriminative model for signal labelling and classification tasks, aiming at taking the best from each world. The idea is to focus the learning of the discriminative model on most likely state sequences as output by the generative model. This allows taking advantage of the usual increased accuracy of generative models on small traini...
متن کاملExploiting Unlabelled Data for Hybrid Object Classification
We propose a semi-supervised learning algorithm for visual object categorization which utilizes statistical information from unlabelled data to increase classification performance. We build on an earlier hybrid generative-discriminative approach by Holub et al. [6] which extracts Fisher scores from generative models. The hybrid model allows us to combine the modelling power and flexibility of g...
